Shovel Knight Showdown is a separate multiplayer-focused mode built around arena battles rather than a new story campaign. It includes a large roster of playable characters pulled from across the game, each with their own move set, plus local battle modes, collectibles, and challenge-style content to unlock.
This is a competitive and party-style addition first, with some light single-player structure through character-specific targets and unlocks, but it is not a continuation of the main adventure.
Showdown is worthwhile if you want a break from the standard platforming and have people to play with locally. It gives Shovel Knight a very different side mode and has enough character variety to stay interesting for a while.
