It is less about a grand new frontier and more about filling in the gap between games, showing how Handsome Jack shifts from a useful ally into the kind of tyrant everyone already knows is coming. That setup gives the campaign a built-in pull, especially if you already have some affection for Borderlands 2 and want to see the machinery behind that fall.

The writing is at its best when it leans into character perspective. Playing as people who would normally be side characters or outright enemies gives conversations a different edge, and the game gets a lot of mileage out of letting your chosen Vault Hunter actually speak during missions. That extra banter makes the campaign feel a little more alive than the first two games, even when the mission structure itself is still familiar.

At the same time, the story never fully escapes the series’ tendency to confuse noise with momentum. Jokes land unevenly, pacing drifts in the middle stretch, and several missions feel like connective tissue rather than chapters with real dramatic weight. The big change is low gravity, and it does more than just decorate the moon setting. Athena, Wilhelm, Nisha, and Claptrap all push you toward different combat rhythms, and their skill trees feel more playful than conservative. There is a stronger sense that your build changes how fights flow, not just how much damage a number does, and that helps carry the game through some recycled mission beats.

There are rough edges, though. Enemy scaling can be uneven, oxygen management is more of a mild chore than an interesting survival layer, and several quests fall back on long firefights against familiar enemy waves. The result is a shooter that is consistently enjoyable and occasionally inventive, but not one that fully tightens all of its ideas into something cleaner than Borderlands 2.

Exploration

The moon setting sounds more adventurous than it often feels in practice. Pandora’s dusty wastelands are replaced by lunar facilities, cracked surfaces, and stretches of open vacuum, which initially creates a welcome sense of novelty. For a while, bouncing across low gravity spaces and seeing Elpis bathed in cold light gives the game an identity that stands apart from the rest of the series.

That first impression fades a bit once you settle into the map design. Many areas are broad without being especially dense, and the longer travel times can make quests feel padded rather than expansive. You cover a lot of ground, but not every detour pays off with memorable side content or environmental storytelling.

There are still pockets of charm in the side missions, especially when the writing stops trying so hard and just lets strange local problems speak for themselves. Hidden chests, alternate routes, and the occasional bit of vertical platforming give you reasons to poke around, particularly early on when the movement system still feels fresh. But this is not a world that rewards curiosity with the same consistency as the best open-feeling shooters.

Exploration lands in a mixed but serviceable place. It supports the loot loop well enough, and the setting does create some memorable vistas, yet it rarely reaches the point where wandering off course becomes the main attraction. Most of the time, you are moving through spaces to get to the next fight rather than because the world itself is pulling you forward.

For all its familiar chaos, The Pre-Sequel has a stronger sense of place than it sometimes gets credit for. The thin atmosphere, muffled sound in airless zones, and constant awareness of oxygen vents help the moon feel distinct from another standard Borderlands backdrop. There is a subtle mechanical and audio texture to Elpis that does real work in selling the setting.

The game also benefits from seeing the universe from a different social angle. Instead of arriving as a heroic outsider, you are helping Hyperion at a moment when that still seems almost reasonable, and that shift gives the world a nice moral slant. Watching ordinary tasks slide toward corporate cruelty adds a bit more coherence to the setting than the series usually manages.

Still, immersion takes some hits from the same things that make Borderlands feel unmistakably Borderlands. Comedy is constant, not always disciplined, and emotional scenes can be undercut by a joke that arrives a beat too early. Repetitive combat barks, fetch quest structure, and some uneven environmental variety remind you of the systems underneath the fiction.

Even with those interruptions, the game holds together better than expected. The moonbase aesthetic, the corporate collapse vibe, and Jack’s gradual unraveling create a thread you can stay connected to from start to finish. It may not disappear around you in the way truly great worldbuilding does, but it is convincing enough to keep the hours from feeling disposable.

Replayability

Replayability is one of the game’s more dependable strengths, largely because the playable cast is so well differentiated. Starting again with a new character does not feel like a cosmetic choice, as each action skill shifts your priorities in combat and changes which weapons suddenly matter. That variety gives the campaign more legs than its mission design might suggest on paper.

The skill trees are generous with experimentation, and there is real pleasure in finding a build that turns a middling weapon into the centerpiece of a whole playstyle. Borderlands has always lived on that relationship between loot luck and build planning, and The Pre-Sequel keeps it intact. If you enjoy tinkering, there is enough here to justify another run or a deeper push into higher-level content.

That said, the reasons to come back are mostly systemic rather than environmental. The campaign path does not branch in meaningful ways, discovery loses some of its shine on repeat visits, and several maps feel longer the second time through. Replayability depends heavily on whether you enjoy the combat sandbox enough to excuse the repetition wrapped around it.

For the right mood, it holds up well. It is easy to revisit in chunks, chase a better build, and let the familiar loop carry you for a weekend. Just do not expect each return trip to reveal a dramatically richer game than the one you saw the first time.
